Dolphin and Whale watching trip in San Diego

We took an afternoon cruise with Tom from Gone Whale Watching and had a wonderful time. As we left the harbor, he filled in a lot of detail about the bay, and its natural and human-influenced history. Once we got into open water, he hit the throttle and we sprung right into heated chase and then sighting of a Fin Whale. Being able to see everything from water level made a huge difference, and being in a nimble boat made it really feel like a hunt. Along the way we saw dozens or even hundreds of dolphins, many of which swam close enough to the boat to touch, and investigated a number of feeding spots where sea lions and a wide variety of seabirds were feasting on schools of anchovies. Throughout the trip we got a ton of information about the aquatic life, geography, and cultural information about San Diego and surrounding areas. It was also just a ton of fun. The kids loved it, and we had a great time from start to finish. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.

I have gone whale watching a few times in San Diego, and our experience with Gone Whale Watching was by far the best! Our captains were very knowledgeable and friendly, and we saw over a dozen whales and tons of dolphins! I will definitely use them again!

Maddy and Tye were amazing guides, they answered every question I had quickly and concisely, and they made sure to bring us around to multiple whales. We got really lucky with the 2.5 hour sunset trip and saw about 7 whales; 2 fins and 5 blues; along with tons of dolphins! Best birthday experience i could have chosen. Its worth the money for sure. It was absolutely magical!

Went whale watching with Captain Michael and had a wonderful experience. He was able to find us lots of dolphins and a whole slew of Fin Whales. The boat was small and the setting was intimate. Highly recommend this tour!

LOTS of playful bottle-nose dolphins, there was a large pod of them surrounding the boat and showing off. No whale sighting, but it wasn't for lack of trying on the guides part. He warned us up front that sightings were down in August and it's not a guarantee. He was frequently in contact with other boats to get any info on whereabouts of animals. Dolphins were definitely amazing and sea lions were funny to watch. My children had a blast! Kid friendly experience for sure and we'd do it again for a chance to see whales.
